Video chat with students from Isanti, Mn...

Flatstanley

Today is one of those days you just can't complain about. Blue skies, southerly wind bringing warmer temperatures and a chance to video chat with a group of students close to home.

At 1:00 today, the School for All Seasons "called" and I had the opportunity to meet face-to-face, virtually, and share a bit about my trip to the arctic and hear about their studies in school on this region. It was mostly me talking, but there was a short Q&A at the end where the students, via a teacher, were able to get in a few extra questions. Working with students in Minnesota has always been high on my list of priorities for this trip and SFAS has been great to share with. We have other calls scheduled for later in the week and next.

Prior to leaving SFAS sent me a "Flat Stanley" polar bear to travel along with me. After I return the polar bear will be delivered to SFAS to remind them about the arctic and our work together. See photo of "Flat Stanley."

There is a lot of planning going on right now in terms of where I'll be at in the days ahead. As I mentioned before, I will not be going to the Barnes Ice Cap and will most likely be wrapping up my time on the Clyde Inlet. As to where I'll be in the next few days, please check back and I'll keep you posted.

Note: Ran out of veggie chili and curry lentil soup today, times are getting tough as I dig deeper into my food bag.

Weather may cause departure delay...

With near freezing temperatures, snow and/or rain and 30 km/h winds forecasted for tomorrow my departure date from Clyde may be delayed. I've talked it over with Tommy and we'll just have to wait and see what the morning brings

I made use of the evening by taking "Flat Stanley Polar Bear" on a tour of Clyde River. Flat Stanley Polar Bear is part of a project I am working on with the School for All Seasons in Cambridge/Isanti Minnesota. The school made the paper mascot for me to bring to the arctic and take pictures of him "enjoying" a romp around the area

In addition to Flat Stanley I'll be collaborating with the teachers to bring some enriching content to their studies on geography and culture. If all goes well we'll also be conducting a video Skype call between their classroom in Minnesota and my camp in the arctic.

It is 12:00am now, but looks like middle of the day outside. I don't know that I could ever get used to the Midnight Sun - or it's opposite the noontime darkness.

School for All Seasons Partnership...

During the 2010 Baffin Island Expedition, I'll be partnering with the School For All Seasons (SFAS) in the Cambridge-Isanti (Isanti, MN) school district. This partnership will connect the expedition with the students and educators of SFAS and allow them to share in the adventure.

During the expedition I will be communicating back with the students and educators at SFAS to share my experiences on Baffin Island. The students will be using images, video and data gathered in my travels to supplement their studies on the arctic environment, geography and animal life. In addition we'll be using Skype, a person-to-person, real-time video application, to virtually take the students on short tours of the arctic environment.

The mission of the Cambridge-Isanti School District #911 is to help all students develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to reach their full potential as successful, independent, life-long learners and responsible citizens in our changing world.
